The University of Gloucestershire’s darts team hosted the University of Warwick’s A and B teams in a match which turned sour following some hostile antics from Warwick’s B’s.
UoG took on Warwick’s B team first, going 2-0 up overall after the two trios games with captain – Alfie Element, James Pryer and Billy Maple won 2-1 after originally going a leg down and Jack Payne, Keelan Hills and Patrick Loveard coasted to a 2-0 victory.
The men from Cheltenham furthered their lead by winning two out of three doubles games.
Duos of Payne and Pryer, Hills and Loveard and Element and Maple all saw 2-1 score-lines, with the latter pairing on the wrong side of the result.
Heading into the singles, UoG were 4-1 up, needing two wins in order to secure a victory in the best-of-11 format.
All of the singles matchups ended 2-0, with Hills and Loveard the only players for UoG to fall short. Payne’s game featured a 19-dart leg.
This meant that UoG had beaten UoW B’s 8-3 overall.
It was versus the A’s where the atmosphere really turned sour in Cheltenham.
Bizarrely, it was the B team who were the antagonists for this, as they jeered and shouted at UoG whilst their players attempted to play.
UoW A’s took a 2-0 lead after the trios, with UoG keeping their teams the same.
Sam Wiener, who had been part of the B team and was practicing on a nearby board let out a shout after a bad dart and proceeded to kick a hole in the wall of UoG’s Francis Close Hall campus.

UoG fought back following the controversy, trailing 3-2 after two duos wins out of three with Pryer and Payne, who had been magnificent all day, hitting a 30-dart leg in the 701 format.
Element’s will have been feeling confident ahead of the singles games, with it being a particularly strong format for the side.
It wasn’t to be however, as only the UoG skipper came out of the games with a victory in a game which itself featured more hostility.
Wiener, again the antagonist, was shouting during Element’s match winning throw to checkout 16, causing tempers to flare for both sides.
UoG will feel aggrieved to have lost such a pivotal fixture at the top of the UDUK Central League table, however, even without the controversy, UoW A’s were just too good for them on the day.
Gloucestershire have a few weeks off, with their next game coming at home to the University of Leicester after the Christmas break.
