Mercedes’ George Russell claims maiden win in Brazil as Max Verstappen ignores team orders

Mercedes driver George Russell claimed his first-ever win in Formula One yesterday, leading the pack in the Brazilian Grand Prix alongside teammate Lewis Hamilton.

Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz rounded off the podium in Brazil, with the Scuderia also securing fourth place with Charles Leclerc recovering from an early crash to climb back up the grid, being aided by a safety car caused by Lando Norris’ car failing.

Coming into the final lap, there was controversy in the Red Bull garage as Max Verstappen defied team orders, refusing to let Sergio Perez through to help him in his fight for second in the driver’s championship.

Understandably annoyed, the Mexican said Verstappen was, “showing who he really is,” in his post-race press conference.

A first-corner crash between Daniel Ricciardo and sprint race pole winner Kevin Magnussen saw both drivers ruled out after the first corner, with a safety car being deployed for the opening stages.
