Liverpool 0 Brighton 1: Alzate deals massive blow to Klopp’s Premier League title defence

Liverpool suffered another blow to their title defence with Steven Alzate’s 54th minute goal confirming The Reds have lost more games this season than in the entirety of the 2019/20 campaign

Liverpool have now suffered back to back home defeats games in the league for the first time since September 2012, with the result also being Brighton’s first win at Anfield since 1982, a fact that Jurgen Klopp was clearly unhappy about.

Brighton proved good value for their lead, with Alzate’s goal continuing The Seagulls form after their win against Spurs, moving them ten points clear of the relegation zone.

It means that Liverpool drop to fourth in the table, seven points behind leaders Manchester City, with The Citizens also having a game in hand.

Mohamed Salah had the first chance of the evening, after being found in space by Jordan Henderson with a brilliant first touch but his second sent the ball floating over the bar.

Liverpool continued in control but without much threat, as they found themselves unable to break The Seagulls lines, with Roberto Firmino under lock and key by the Brighton defence.

Brighton soon had their first good chance of the night, with a brilliant run of play courtesy of Leandro Trossard and a brilliant run from Neal Maupay, whose deflected shot fell to Dan Burn, who was unable to convert from ten yards out.

The first half continued to have limited chances, with neither team able to get an effort on target during the first half, with neither side prepared able to create space in what was a closely contested half.

This continued early into the second half, with both Trossard and Firmino making dangerous runs, but both being unable to get decent contact on their efforts, much to the bereavement of Liverpool supporters.

The goal on the night came in the 55th minute, with a through ball finding Burn in space behind an unaware Trent Alexander-Arnold, with his header across goal deflecting off three players, before finally going in courtesy of Alzate.

Liverpool struggled to respond in the immediate aftermath, as their inability to break behind Brighton, as a combination of set pieces cleared comfortably away by The Seagulls.

Alexander-Arnold was eventually able to break behind the irontight Brighton defence, with his pull-back finding Salah in space, but his shot again went high over the bar.

Brighton were not content sitting back during this however, with their second shot on target coming from Pascal Gross, who ghosted into the back post after taking a corner, with Alisson replacement Caoimhin Kelleher reacting well.

The pressure continued to pile on by Brighton, with Maupay and Trossard combining again to create a chance that Kelleher was again equal to.

Klopp’s side continued to lack the Plan B that they needed on the night, with the full time whistle leaving Liverpool with an increased need to get a good result against an inform Manchester City on Saturday if they want to continue their title defence.
