Live reaction to women’s UEFA Champions League draw: Women’s Super League teams avoid Lyon in Quarter Finals as Manchester City face Barcelona while Chelsea clash with VFL Wolfsburg

Women’s Super League leaders Chelsea discovered they will take on VFL Wolfsburg in the quarter finals while Gareth Taylor’s Manchester City face FC Barcelona Femeni.

Both WSL clubs were able to avoid defending champions Lyon, with the seven-time European Champions likely to battle it out with fellow French side Paris-Saint Germain; who are 5-0 up from the first leg against AC Sparta Praha after a covid issue delayed the second leg, which is now scheduled for next Wednesday

The ties are set to be played on the 23/24 March with the return legs played the following week, Chelsea will first host Wolfsburg in just under two weeks while City will make the trip to Spain.

Elsewhere in the draw, Frauen-Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich face Swedish outfit FC Rosengard, after both teams advanced through the previous round with ease.

The draw also included each clubs pathways to the final – if Chelsea are able to move past Wolfsburg they will face either PSG, Sparta Praha, Bayern Munich or Rosengard.

Manchester City, on the other hand, face a slightly harder route to the final as they will have to defeat Lyon, who have won the last five Women’s Champions League’s, to make it to the final two.

Chelsea head coach Emma Hayes will definitely be pleased with the draw as her side have avoided a lot of the big-hitters and this came after more good news this morning as star player Fran Kirby signed a new contract with the Blues until 2023.

Although City face a tougher path, their squad is riddled with excellent players such as Ellen White, Lucy Bronze and Steph Houghton and the dominant performance over Fiorentina in the previous round, combined with their nine game winning streak in the WSL, will give them plenty of confidence when they head to Barcelona in 11 days.
