Jason Roy’s omission from the World Cup squad is a problem England don’t need

Leaving Jason Roy out of your World Cup squad will come back to haunt England after they lose their first group game to New Zealand

Roy was integral in England’s World Cup-winning squad in 2019 but he was dropped for Harry Brook in the 2023 World Cup squad

The Surrey man scored 443 runs at an average of 63.28 in the 2019 ODI World Cup and also got the run out which sealed the famous victory in 2019

The South African-born man was left out of England’s squad for this year’s World Cup due to not having the versatility to bat anyway in their top order compared to Brook

People can’t question Roy’s form because he’s got two hundreds in his last six games with an average of 46.33 this year but this isn’t the first time for Roy as he missed out on England’s T20 World Cup-winning squad down under last year

The argument is there for him missing out though as he can only open the batting in one-day cricket whereas Brook can bat anywhere in their top seven but Roy will definitely feel hard done by

Jason Roy will be disappointed with the way that Dawid Malan has come and has taken his spot whilst cementing it as his own with the weight of runs he has scored over the last year, scoring 605 runs at a strike rate of 95.12

England have broken up the formidable partnership of Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow which was key in their 2019 win as Roy would go out hard and put the pressure on the opposition whilst Bairstow would build an innings

The rise of Harry Brook has put pressure on not just Roy but all the other players and the selectors, as people have been calling him the new Joe Root of the future

In 2023 Jason Roy has a better average than Root, Bairstow and Brook but England wouldn’t leave those three out of their squad as they are term as ‘match-winning players’ so why leave Roy out?

England have started their defending campaign of the World Cup horrendously with a thumping loss to New Zealand by nine wickets, their former captain said “They were so far off the mark… with the ball, they looked undercooked”

As the World Cup is in India where Jason Roy has a very good record, not just in one-day cricket but also in the IPL whereas Malan has struggled with his style of batting

If you were an opening bowler you would feel more scared bowling to Roy over Malan especially in a world cup

In my opinion, this will come back to hurt England later on in the tournament as they will need to get off to fast starts by putting the pressure under the bowlers due to the nature of conditions in India
