In celebration of Newport County’s goalkeeper Tom King scoring last night against Cheltenham Town, we’ve put together a list of five more ‘keepers that got their names on the scoresheet!
- Jimmy Glass – Carlisle United 1999
This is the one of the greatest stories in English Football. It was the last game of the 1999 season Carlisle were on the brink of being relegated out of the Football League; they needed a last minute winner to stay in the league. Up steps on loan goalkeeper Jimmy Glass…
2. Paul Robinson – Leeds United 2003
Robinson really channeled his inner centre-back for this one. With not long to go in the League Cup, Leeds needed a goal to force extra-time against Swindon Town. His brilliant glancing header at the front post provided just that.
3. Mart Poom – Sunderland 2003
2003 really was the year for goalkeeper scoring amazing headers. Mart Poom leapt higher than an NBA All-Star to head the Black Cats level against Derby County in the final few minutes. What makes it even better is that Poom had just joined Sunderland that season from Derby!
4. Rogerio Ceni – Sao Paulo 1992-2015
Okay this one is cheating a bit. Ceni took free-kicks and penalties for Sao Paulo in his incredible 23-year career with them, amassing 65 goals in the process. It’s simply incredible to see a goalkeeper bend in free-kicks like Ceni did.
5. Paul Robinson (again) – Tottenham Hotspur 2007
This one wasn’t quite as dramatic as his first, but what a hit it was. Robinson absolutely leathered a free-kick from deep within his own half against Watford, only for it to take a glorious bounce to lob Ben Foster. Route one at its finest.
Goalkeepers scoring goals have provided some of the rarest, most enjoyable moments in football. Long may it continue!
