Gloucester City Women looking to leapfrog Bristol & West Ladies as they search for a winning start to 2022

Gloucester City Women kick-off the new year when they host Bristol & West ladies at New Meadow Park this Sunday at 2pm.

Chris Hill’s side haven’t played yet this year after their away game against Longlevens last week was postponed due to an unplayable pitch at Longford Lane. City last played on December 19th where they ran out 6-4 winners against strugglers Abbeymead Rovers.

New signing Rakiya Morgan-King made her debut in the win and stole the headlines as her 27-minute hat-trick, accompanied by goals from Chloe Golding and Kate Ambrey, saw City ease past Rovers.

Bristol & West currently sit three points above City in the Gloucestershire County Women’s Football League, and are coming off the back of a thumping 7-1 win over Bishops Cleeve Ladies back in December. This has been the only win that they have secured on the pitch, with their other points coming from forfeited fixtures.

Both sides are equally matched for recent form after collecting seven points apiece their last six games, however, Bristol are yet to win an away game this season with their only ‘win’ coming when Abbeymead Rovers failed to complete the fixture.

Speaking to the club, manager Hill reflected on the season so far saying: “I still remember the first training session when eight players turned up. So it’s been great to look back on the past seven months and see the squad go from strength to strength.

“We have learnt a lot and have seen that recently with our improved form and results such as our 3-1 win against the now disbanded Cotswold rangers and Longlevens and our 6-4 win against Abbeymead Rovers.”

City would need to win by at least a four-goal margin if they were to leapfrog Bristol & West, and with Morgan-King hungry for more goals, New Meadow Park could be set for a goal-fest this weekend.
