Gloucester City AFC drew 0-0 with Boston United on Saturday with City boss Lee Mansell viewing the result as two points dropped.
Gloucester entered the tie having not lost a league match since their 3-1 defeat to Kidderminster Harriers on November 23. Boston however, were without a win in their previous three games having suffered defeats against Kidderminster, Brackley Town and Alfreton Town.
All this was expected to culminate in an exciting game, but instead we were subjected to an entirely unremarkable 0-0 draw, with neither side seriously threatening to break the deadlock. The best chance of the first half came after 13 minutes via a 30-yard effort from Tommy O’Sullivan that went just wide of the top right corner in what would have been one of the goals of the season.
The second period brought with it more mediocre football from both teams. Gloucester did manage to mount some pressure of Boston during the final 10 minutes with Bristol Rovers loanee Ollie Hulbert narrowly missing a headed chance in the 89th minute.
After the game, City boss Lee Mansell was scathing in his assessment of his team’s performance, speaking about the first half the Gloucester boss said: “we were not at it in the slightest, second to every ball and could not get going.”
Despite their attacking woes City did manage to keep another clean sheet, their fourth out of the last five league games. “That’s three clean sheets on the bounce so we’re getting that right” said Mansell, “but that’s not just the back five, that’s the rest of team with how hard they work and how hard they are to break down.”
Gloucester face 19th placed Blyth Spartans on Saturday, January 15. Mansell will hope his side can regain some of its ferocity going forward in order to continue their unbeaten run.
