Gloucester City Queens have used the forced Covid-19 break in December to their advantage as they announced the signing of Portuguese guard Carolina Marques last week.
Marques, who made her debut for the Queens last weekend, was playing for WNBL side Worcester Wolves. The guard decided not to continue her studies in P.E and Coaching and make the step up to the highest division in women’s British basketball, the WBBL.
The Queens do in fact have a productive connection with Worcester Wolves after signing Spanish guard Inma Bautista from the side last summer. Marques was without doubt an impactful player for the Wolves so far this season scoring an average of 11.5 points per game and making an impressive 75 free-throw percentage.
Queens head coach Jay Marriott was over the moon with the addition, “Once again Worcester have been fantastic to us and reached out and asked if we would be interested in Carol which we absolutely would. She’s a fantastic player.”
Marriott, who has been determined to bolster the Queens roster after the devastating ACL injury blow to captain Maura Fitzpatrick, was pleased with Marques’ debut against Oaklands on Saturday and had some encouraging words to say.
“I was really pleased with Carol’s performance, she only had a week with us and I threw her straight into the starting line up which is a big ask for anyone and she took that in her stride. I love her energy around the team as we continue to build our Queens culture.”
Marques is an extremely talented guard who has played a total of 18 games for Worcester and featured for 48.5 minutes all together despite only being 21-years-old. Her addition to the roster will of course give them more options when it comes to games and player minutes.
Most importantly though she will give the team another playing dimension and improve competitiveness for places within the squad as the Queens look to strengthen as they aim to push up the WBBL league table.
Next up for the Queens is a trip to Nottingham Wildcats in the WBBL Trophy this Saturday afternoon.
