Former England, Arsenal, Birmingham and Chelsea star and former student at the University of Gloucestershire Karen Carney joins the long line of successful graduates as she is awaiting her Honorary which will be presented to her by the Bishop of Gloucester, the Right Reverend Rachel Treweek, Pro-Chancellor of the University, and Lord Michael Bichard, Chancellor of the University.
Carney has a career to be proud of alongside being a professional footballer and playing over 140 matches for England and playing at Arsenal and Chelsea in her career after starting at Birmingham, she has received an MBE and now is in the Sports broadcast industry working at the top level alongside the top pundits covering the Premier league and covering international matches.
Carney was balancing her early career at Birmingham alongside a degree at Gloucestershire university suggesting the determination and effort levels she had couldn’t have been doubted
Carney who will receive an Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy; TV presenter, interior designer alongside philanthropist Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, who will receive an Honorary Doctorate of Arts; and Nick Gazzard, the founder of the Hollie Gazzard Trust, which is increasing awareness of and tackling domestic abuse, who will be awarded an Honorary Fellowship.
Staying local, Gazzard has built a successful 30-year career within financial services alongside a spell at Cheltenham Town Football Club. Following the murder of his daughter Hollie by her former partner, in February 2014, he felt strongly that something positive should come out of Hollie’s death and created the Hollie Gazzard Trust. Nick is determined to try and prevent similar tragedies by increasing awareness of domestic abuse and stalking and the devastating effect it causes.
Nick’s dedication and tireless hard work for the trust is expanding to further work across the country. Gazzard is a keynote speaker at various events including Domestic Abuse Masterclass at Gloucestershire University; ‘Behind Closed Doors’ Domestic Abuse and Stalking Conference in Gloucester and Bristol.
