Former Cheltenham talisman bags Player of the Month award after scoring seven in six for Charlton

Former Cheltenham Town star Alfie May has been named the League One Player of the Month for October.

Seven goals in six games this month has seen May leapfrog the likes of Colby Bishop and Jordan Rhodes to sit joint-top of the league’s scoring charts with 11 goals.

The 30-year-old talisman moved from Cheltenham to Charlton in the summer after a lengthy summer transfer saga.

Many fans felt that the fee, reportedly rising to as much as £300,000, was too small for the return that the forward would yield when switching the Completely-Suzuki Stadium for the Valley.

May scored 67 times in 165 games for the Robins and broke their EFL scoring record during his three-and-a-half seasons in Gloucestershire.

The club clearly holds a place in his heart as May was spotted in the stands watching his former team as they fell to an embarrassing 5-1 loss away at AFC Wimbledon in the first round of the FA Cup last weekend.

May’s goalscoring form has helped Charlton climb up the table in recent weeks and they’re now only five points off the playoff places with a game in hand on Stevenage in the final playoff spot.

Unlike his usage at Cheltenham, May has been moved around by the new Charlton manager, Michael Appleton.

May has found himself behind the main number nine, on the right wing or spearheading the Charlton attack (where Robins fans will be most familiar with seeing him).

Cheltenham boss, Darrell Clarke, was nominated for the October Manager of the Month award after he has turned around Cheltenham’s fortunes getting them back in touch with the rest of the league table after starting the season goalless in eleven

That award though, was given to Bolton manager, Ian Evatt, who’s side is in the first playoff position only three points off the top of the table.

Cheltenham Town will host Wigan Athletic at home on Saturday, 11 November while Charlton travel to league leaders Portsmouth.
