The Gloucestershire side took the lead in the 28th minute with a goal from Estelle Randall. The home side struggled to get through the Forest Green defense, who proved to be a brick wall all game.
With Rovers piling on the pressure, in form forward Nynka Rucker netted her 8th goal of the season to double the lead for the side in green. FGR ladies defended excellently for the rest of the game and secured the three points and a clean sheet to take back to Gloucestershire.
FGR women’s player Louise Fensome also tweeted out after the game “Great start to 2023 for us💚⚽”
This win sends FGR women to the top of the division above Bristol Rovers Women. A very good response to the 5-0 defeat to Bristol Rovers in December.
FGR women’s player Louise Fensome is fairly confident this season saying “We are really dynamic with the group of girls and individually we have very good technical players, The difference we have to other teams is that we work hard together on and off the pitch” She added “We need to replicate how we performed in the first half of the season in the second half and we have a great chance to get that promotion spot.”
FGR women’s manager Tom Needham spoke about their chances for Promotion this season quoting “I think it will be very challenging but I’m really happy with my squad and how they are playing at the moment.” He stated that “I wouldn’t swap them for any other team”
Looking ahead to their next game FGR face 3rd place Sherborne Town Ladies who have two games in hand on the Rovers so a win would be massive to maintain themselves at the top of the table.
Sherborne also kicked off their 2023 campaign with a 3-0 victory over Royal Wooten Basset. FGR women’s media manager James Williams has been very impressed with the team this season and stated “it’s such a big positive to have a mix of younger and older players. This season has been much more competitive which is very good for the women’s game, any of the top four could win the league this season”.
Louise was very impressed with the turnout by the fans for the home games and encourages more people to come and support them as they push for that promotion spot.
