Five things we learned: Everton 1-3 Manchester City

By Nathan John @University of Gloucestershire

Manchester City cruised to their 17th consecutive victory to go 10 points clear at the top of the Premier League table, as they beat Everton 3-1 at Goodison Park. Here are five things we learned from the game.

Manchester City look set to claim their third league title in four seasons.

As if it wasn’t already apparent before last night’s result, City look set to reclaim the Premier League title from Liverpool, with the Reds now 16 points off of Manchester City and in 6th place in the table. Ironically, this is exactly how many points Manchester City were behind Liverpool at this stage last season, showing how much of a difference a year can make in the Premier League.

Bernado Silva is still a key figure in this Manchester City side

Having started just 16 games this season, with five goal contributions to his name, it is fair to say that Bernado Silva has looked a far cry from the player he was just a few seasons ago. The Portuguese maestro enjoyed his best season in a City shirt in 2018/19, racking up 14 goal contributions in 31 league starts. However, a goal and an assist last night will have reminded Guardiola of the attackers ability to change games in the blink of an eye and Silva has propelled himself back into contention as a regular starter once again.

Everton will need to fight for European places

The Toffees are enjoying their best campaign in the league since the David Moyes era, with them currently sitting in seventh position, just three points behind their Merseyside rivals Liverpool with a game in hand on the Reds. Everton have looked a side reborn under the guidance of Carlo Ancelotti this season, having even briefly sat top of the table in mid-October. Everton have endured however, three defeats in their last five games, including losses to both relegation threatened Newcastle and Fulham. Although currently in a Europa League spot, the fight will be tough for Everton, with the likes of Aston Villa, Arsenal and Tottenham all looking to secure a place in Europe.

Phil Foden could be one of the greatest English players ever to be produced

The 20-year-old has been absolutely outstanding this year, putting in genuinely breath-taking displays week in, week out for City this season. With 9 goal contributions in just 13 league starts this campaign, the attacking midfielder has been integral towards the Citizens success this season, with former Manchester City defender even labeling Foden a “future £200 million player”.

This Manchester City side could be the greatest City team we have seen

Manchester City set a new-record by beating Swansea 3-1 in the FA Cup to become the first English side to win 15 consecutive games in all competitions, with their last defeat coming in November away at Spurs. That run has now been extended to 17 games and there are no signs of let up from Guardiola’s men, with a Carabao Cup final still to look forward to, as well as the Champions League knockout stages and FA Cup. City look unstoppable with 56 points from their opening 24 League games and it is hard to see anybody catching up with them now.
