FA Cup giant killers Boreham Wood strike again after shock win over Bristol Rovers

Boreham Wood beat homeside Bristol Rovers 2-0 at Memorial Stadium this Sunday. It’s the first time in the history of the FA Cup a non-league side have reached the third round in three consecutive years.

Boreham Wood marched into the third round of the Emirates FA cup with a convincing 2-0 win against Bristol Rovers. 

Goals from defenders Will Evans and David Stephens put the visitors 2-0 up before half time.

Rovers failed to make a meaningful response and it wasn’t until the 82nd minute that Boreham Wood goalkeeper Nathan Ashmore had to make a save. 

The National League side Boreham Wood who made the 5th round last year will now have a keen eye on Monday’s third round draw.

In the early exchanges of the game, the home side were looking more dangerous but failed to create any clear cut chances. Against the run of play, visitors Boreham Wood took the lead with a well worked set piece routine.

George Broadbent’s edge of the box shot blasted goalward, a slight deflection from defender Will Evans on 14 minutes, 1-0. Rovers looked shell shocked and soon found themselves 2-0 down.

The home side missed numerous opportunities to clear the ball from inside the box, eventually Boreham Wood centre half David Stephens was left with time and space to head home from 8 yards. 

Home team manager Joey Barton responded at half time by making 4 changes as he desperately searched for a way back into the game. Rovers came out after the break with a little more spring in their step but were met by a determined Boreham Wood side. 

Wood rarely looked like conceding and it wasn’t until deep into extra time that Rovers were able to generate a clear cut chance.
