Double Decker Bus Overturned in Crash on A39

A road collision involving a double decker bus and a motorcycle was reported yesterday morning in Bridgwater.

The incident was initially declared major due to the number of people involved, including 70 Hinkley Point C workers, the bus driver and a motorcyclist.

Emergency services were at the scene, confirming there were no fatalities at the time.

However, 54 people were treated at the scene for injuries before being referred to one of three healthcare facilities in the vicinity.

The road has now been cleared and the A39 reopened after quick response from emergency services to the scene.

Strategic Commander at the Southwestern Ambulance service advised people to “continue to take care while travelling today, the conditions are still hazardous due to the freezing overnight temperatures and residual water on the road from the past week’s wet weather.”

Even though all main routes have now been gritted, it’s important to remember that “ice can still form on gritted roads which is why we echo the advice of our Avon and Somerset Police colleagues to only travel when it is necessary and to proceed with extreme caution if you are using our roads,” a Somerset County Council spokesperson has said.
