Digital Executive Of Forest Green Rovers Laurie Martin Compares Ex-Premier League Player Connor Wickham To Harry Kane During His Time In Gloucestershire

Laurie Martin, digital executive of Forest Green Rovers compares former Premier League player Connor Wickham to Harry Kane as the 29-year-old departs the club.

The former Sunderland and Crystal Palace player played 20 times for Rovers scoring nine goals.

Wickham, who is currently a free agent, has been linked with struggling Championship side, Cardiff City.

“He was always likely to have Championship interest partly because of what he has done.

“He’s pretty low risk, he’s a big name, so he should be able to step into Cardiff and contribute.”

The Englishman and the Gloucestershire side were seen as a good fit by Martin as Wickham’s contract expired in January.

“It was the ideal situation for Forest Green, they got the best out of player for few months and then he went off.

“He helped Forest Green, he’s still their top goal scorer now, he’s contributed on the pitch, and he was always likely to leave whatever the situation.”

The digital executive believes Wickham still has plenty of playing days left in his career.

“There’s probably some perceptions of him being this striker that’s nearing retirement, which is not the case at all.

“He’s still got plenty to offer, and he showed that in the short time he was at Forest Green in what was a good goal scoring record.”

Everyone involved with Rovers had plenty of praise for the forward and Martin saw that talent that he had.

“He still has got unbelievable technical ability, that really goes away, he’s a great finisher.

“He scored that amazing goal at South Shields away in the FA Cup from his own half, it shows he is capable of moments of magic.

“The perception always was that Connor Wickham’s top level was way higher than the bottom of League One when Forest Green signed him.”

The University of Gloucestershire graduate sees similarities from Tottenham’s new all time top goal scorer, Harry Kane.

â€śHe’s the type that wants to do it all, like a Kane where he wanted to be the man at the top of the pitch scoring goals.

“He also likes to drop deep into a 10 and spray balls to quicker players that are further forward.”

Forest Green are currently rock bottom of League One and will be desperate to turn around their poor form under newly appointed manager Duncan Ferguson.

As for Wickham, he’s heavily linked with a move to Wales as Cardiff City have big interest in the forward, as he is currently training with the club.
