Chris Hussey gave a players perspective of how a week without football has benefitted the squad on and off the pitch, and how his experience has benefitted his team this season – “from a recovery point of view, it’s beneficial and from a tactical point of view it’s beneficial. We do a bit more work on the previous game and what we can work on.”
The 32-year-old has played in all but one of the league matches this season for Cheltenham, and has also played a part in both of their FA Cup meetings against Gillingham.
His role has been altered throughout the course of the season, playing almost every position down the left hand side, covering for any player suspended or injured and stated this in a press conference this morning by saying, “no matter who plays, they know their jobs, responsibilities and roles. Obviously there is going to be changes, injuries that are happening up and down the country. It’s the same for everybody.”
Hussey’s positive performances have not only been bolstering himself as a player, but also the younger players around him too, as he added, “from my point of view, as I’ve said I’m more experienced and lead by example. My job on the pitch never changes.”
Cheltenham have been unfortunate with injuries this season, with the defence being changed on a regular basis, but Hussey’s experience has allowed him to thrive in multiple positions.
The makeshift left midfielder is not letting the occasion or shine of the cup get to him, as he prepares for the clash against Wimbledon on Saturday – “the FA Cup’s the FA Cup. Its a good competition and its one that’s been around for some time, but again its another game of football. 48 minutes at a time and we’ll see where we end up.”
Cheltenham’s first round match against Gillingham saw Hussey pick up a crucial assist and then managed to keep a clean sheet in the replay on their way to the second round.
