Cheltenham Town’s Alfie May wins League One Player of the Month

Cheltenham Town striker Alfie May has been awarded the League One Player of the Month following eight goals in just six games in February.

May, who was Cheltenham’s top scorer in their title-winning League Two season last year, was League One’s top marksman in the month, and is now fifth in the division’s scoring charts having found the back of the net 17 times.

The former Doncaster forward, who joined Cheltenham in 2020, scored a double against AF Wimbledon on the opening day of the month, helping Cheltenham to a 2-2 draw.

He then scored the winner over Sunderland to secure the Robins’ first win since November and end an 11-game winless run. May bagged once against Fleetwood before he scored four in the 5-5 draw against Wycombe.

His recent form has helped Cheltenham climb to 14th in the table, and the Robins now sit 12 points clear of the relegation zone with 10 games remaining.

Michael Duff’s team face struggling Morecambe, who were promoted from the fourth tier along with Cheltenham last season, on Saturday, looking to extend their advantage to the drop zone.

The 28-year-old May has now hit 20 goals in all competitions for the season, but he revealed he’s keen for more in the press conference ahead of their League One clash this weekend.

“I’ve hit my own personal targets,” he said to Park Life Sport, among others. “I always said to myself if you get to that target you’ve got to start again, hit some more, break some more targets. For me now it’s important to take it game-by-game, and try and get the three points for my team.”

Despite the fact that only four players in Cheltenham Town’s history have scored more league goals in a campaign than May so far, all of whom did it lower than League One level, he isn’t thinking about Mohamed Eisa’s record of 23 league goals right now.

“I’m a massive winner, so I don’t care how the goals go in, who scores them. The three points are the most important thing as an overall team. The goals wouldn’t come without my teammates.”
