Josh Griffiths says he hopes he’s “repaid the club” for offering him the opportunity to play for Cheltenham Town.
The 19-year-old has played 42 games for the Robins in League Two and is in pole position to win the golden glove with 21 clean sheets.
In a season beyond his wildest dreams, Griffiths hopes to cap an extraordinary year by lifting the league title on Saturday.
“It’s been a very good season,” Griffiths revealed. “What we achieved last week was massive for the players, the fans and everyone associated with the club.
“The opportunity we’ve got on Saturday to be crowned champions is 100% worth taking. Having that winners’ medal around my neck will be the icing on the cake.”
His outstanding performances for Cheltenham was recognised on a national scale when Aidy Boothroyd selected him for his England squad ahead of the U21 European Championships.
Despite not featuring in any of the Three Lions’ games, Griffiths says it’s an experience he’ll never forget.
“It was a great experience. Although I didn’t play, it’s always nice to step out of your comfort zone and to try something new,” Griffiths recalled.
“To train with top class players and different coaches was good and I’ll take a lot away from those two weeks.”
Griffiths has also taken inspiration from his West Brom teammate Sam Johnstone, who received his first senior call-up by England manager Gareth Southgate in March.
His aim for the near future is to become the first-choice goalkeeper for the U21s but does have aspirations of representing his country at the highest level.
“I think it’s every young kid’s dream to get a senior call-up,” Griffiths said.
He added: “Of course that’s something that I want to achieve for the future but first I want to get that number one spot for the U21s and continue to play first team football.”
