UOG Men’s Football first team have won 2-0 in their opening match of the 25/26 BUCS season against University of South Wales second team after goals from Ben Brown and Jax Hundt gave Gloucestershire the perfect start to the new season.
After scoring Gloucestershire’s first goal of this season defender, Ben Brown, “could not be happier” to their impressive start to the year.
“It was a brilliant result, but a tough and physical battle. We went into the break 1-0 up with myself scoring which does not happen very often, but the boys worked really hard in this new league.”
“If we put that kind of performance in last year we would have won four or five nil and would have been a comfortable result but obviously this year the levels have gone up with being in a new league, tougher teams but that second goal allowed us have a bit of breathing room and see the game out.”
Brown also stood in as Captain with Ben Wheaver, the regular first team captain out injured, and was asked what his final message to the team was before they made their way onto the pitch.
“Obviously we played their (USW) ones in a friendly last week and beat them 1-0 so coming into today we can get a bit complacent, but I told the lads that we cannot take the foot off the gas. We have to keep the momentum going and build on from today.”
“The first 15 minutes of every game is going to be important in every game this season, you know today we did not really let them (USW) get out their own half, and a keeper did not have a shot to save, so that was the message I was trying to enforce to the boys.”
Looking ahead, Brown gave both his personal and the squad’s aspirations they would like to have achieved by the end of the season.
“I feel like we have always got to look up, you know the sky is the limit for our team. The first years have come in and made a massive impact and obviously we would like to stay in the league first and foremost, but there is no reason why we cannot push for the title. It’s a very tough league with a lot of competitive teams, but I believe we have got the quality in the dressing room believe and go on to achieve that.”
UOG’s first team travel to Hartpury’s seconds next Wednesday, 22nd October, who were defeated 2-0 in their opening match to Solent’s First team. With Brown and the rest of the squad expecting another three points and a solid performance away from home.
