‘With the amount of depth in our squad this year we should be able to fill the bench every game, which is a nice change from last season’, UOG Women’s Rugby flanker Megan Hughes states as she looks forward to her side’s 2026/27 campaign.
Hughes’ (pictured above, credit – Freja McGourty) squad took on the University of Birmingham in a pre-season game just over two weeks ago, being narrowly defeated 28-24.
Although the result was still a loss, this was a massive improvement from their performances from last year, now being led by new Vice Captain Naia Boyes. ‘I want to take leadership a lot more with my new role, by leading both the girls and our forwards pack’, the second year prop exclaimed.

‘We’ve got a lot more experience in the team, through both coaches and the girls. There are a lot of players that we’ve added that have played high level rugby and a lot less that are coming in without playing the sport before.’
Turning focus onto the season opener and rest of their campaign, Hughes stated ‘making five turnovers herself and watching her teammates develop’ is a personal goal, displaying her veteran leadership and selfless nature.
‘I’m mostly looking forward to Varsity, it’s always a great few days and hopefully this year we can get the win. It will also be exciting to come up against teams such as Swansea and Hartpury who we haven’t played before.’
