UOG Womens rugby boss Gavin Deane on Bucks, Varsity and a end of season review

UOG Rugby Women’s boss Gavin Deane claimed that it’s been a really tricky season for the team despite the win in Varsity 2025.

He said: “It was a really tricky year for us because of the fact that the league was so competitive. We had Hartpury seconds, Cardiff Mets seconds, their first teams are all super rugby sides.

“So as a year, it was really, really difficult year. But we managed top four which ultimately was our aim at the start of the season.”

When asked about the three teams ahead of them and how they can look to build into the new season, the coach claimed that they need commitment.

He explained: “It’s a case of having players can properly commit. We’re a university so we suffer from students having to leave to get their degree but that’s how it is.

“That’s the most difficult part for a university of our size.

“To be able to have constant 25 players available week in week out.”

Speaking to Deane, he felt as it was their best chance since the COVID-19 season.

“I think the team were absolutely class, I think the best message myself and Harry (assistant coach) gave to the girls was forget about the situation, forget about the crowd.

“The girls went in up in the first half, and of course they were really excited.

“We knew we just had to stay cool for the second half and win.”

Deane spoke on the summer ahead and what he’s got planned outside of university sport.

“I do a bit of private coaching on the side throughout the year as well, just one to one training, small groups etc.

“Sometimes I do one to one sessions where lads will want to look at his kicking technique, we would spend 45 minutes to hour really cracking down his technique.”
