UOG Men’s Football Manager Ivor Gumm wants his players to take a leaf from England and Tottenham legend Jimmy Greaves’ book

University of Gloucestershire Men’s Football Manager Ivor Gumm wants his player’s to take inspiration from one of England’s all time greatest strikers.

Gumm was coached by Jimmy Greaves during his youth career and feels his side need to work on their wastefulness in front of goal.

“How the score was only 2-0 I’ll never know because it should’ve been 12! We missed so many chances. On Friday when we have training, it’s definetly going to be shooting practice because we created good opportunities.

“I got taught many, many years ago by a guy called Jimmy Greaves, who was different class. All he said was just relax, just breathe out as you strike the ball. As you go to shoot, just breathe out. What did we do? Got the ball and we panicked!”

Despite missing several chances on Monday night, Gumm believes his side are still set for a positive campaign.

“I’ve told the boys; I want to win the league. I want to win the Varsity game and I want to win the cup as well. The treble.

“If the boys work in the right way and maintain their attitudes, there is no reason to why they can’t. It will be them that will stop it from happening, nobody else. We’ll win the lot.”

The first team has seen the arrival of several first years to the side after a series of trials.

Henry Danter-Welch, Oakley James and Jake Clack have all come straight into the first team squad.

Gumm admitted how these players have impressed him but particularly gave credit to another new arrival Adam Smith.

“He’s been different class. He’s come on board and taken on the things that we’re looking for from a midfield player.

“Particularly how to make movements late into the box, off of the blind side of the way we’re attacking.”

Gumm was announced as manager over the Summer and has been seriously impressed by the attitudes of the players in training and in games.

“The attitude from the boys has been really positive. They’ve been open to being coached and open to being shown new ideas and different thoughts of ways to play the game.

“We’re focusing on how we’re building up so everybody understands their individual role but they also understand their role within the team framework. We’re getting better each week but there is still plenty to work on.”
