Cheltenham Town face off in a West Country clash with Bristol Rovers tomorrow, and Robins forward George Lloyd believes that all the players “One through to 11 need to fight for every game.
“We can’t drop our level at all in any game, that showed against Wimbledon, you get found out, so we have to be at our best every single game to be able to compete.” Said, Lloyd
Cheltenham are still struggling at the bottom of the league, and Lloyd admits he is also struggling since coming back from injury.
Lloyd said: “I’ve been back for five weeks now. Still don’t feel 100% fit where I was but when you miss preseason it’s really hard to catch up because you can’t do the workload that they want you to do in preseason, but I feel like I’m starting to get there now.”
Lloyd has started to make some more regular appearances, playing 90 minutes in their last game against Charlton, but the 23-year-old is still goalless for The Robins this season.
Lloyd said: “It would be nice to put one in the back of the net. Ultimately where we are as a team, we need to stick together. Need to score a few goals.
“I know that myself, but as long as I keep putting performances in and getting in the right areas, I’m sure they’ll come.”
Part of the reason for the lack of goals from Lloyd is he hasn’t been played in his preferred position, he sees this as an opportunity to learn.
The Englishman said: “I’ve started in kind of a ten roll, trying to push on a little bit against Charlton. I quite enjoyed it. It’s quite fun playing different positions sometimes and learning.
“I know. I like to fight. I like to battle. So, it was kind of just trying to do that and get forward as much as possible. But yeah, forward is my most preferred position.”
For Lloyd this will be his first taste of a West Country derby, this game also holds significance as Cheltenham manager Darrell Clarke will be returning to his former side with which he achieved back-to-back promotions.
Lloyd insists that this won’t affect any of the players, he said: “It’ll be an occasion. But you can’t let any of that affect you. At the end of the day, it’s 22 people playing football on a pitch and some referees, and nothing changes in that.
“You can’t let the occasion kind of get to you. So, we just got to do what we need to do to try and win the game.”
Cheltenham town plays Bristol Rovers at the Memorial Stadium tomorrow for a 3 pm kick off.
