Quedgeley Wanderers manager Michael Mayes leaves on mutual decision after brutal confrontation with Gala Wilton

Quedgeley Wanderers manager Michael Mayes has left the club on mutual terms just less than 24 hours after the huge confrontation with Gala Wilton’s boss Stu Griffith, writes Dziugas Kandrotas.

As the final goal was scored by Wilton just moments before the final whistle was blown Mayes flipped out with shocking kick at Wilton’s Griffith.

‘’I was silly, I tried to apologise but they weren’t having it’’ was stated by Mayes.

The Welshman acknowledged his hot temper and was nothing but sorry for the portrayed actions.

He believed his passion for the game got the better of him on the day.

‘’Emotions ran high, what happened was handbags at best and I shouldn’t have left my technical area to celebrate with the players’’ said Griffith.

Gala’s boss knew the celebrations initiated the outburst of Mayes and has realised that his actions were also wrong.

The action caused huge amounts of controversy, sparking a further investigation from the FA into both teams’ managers with suspected homophobic comments from Griffith.

Quedgeley released an official club announcement on Sunday afternoon stating ‘’There is no place in football for homophobia, threats of violence or violence itself on the field.’’

The Wanderers have been shifting focus on their youth players that can come through in represent the club for years to come.

Actions as such ‘’are not condoned’’ as stated in the club announcement post on twitter.

Quedgeley also added ‘’We wish Michael Mayes the best in the future’’, as they have temporarily pushed up their reserve team manager James Mulrain and his right-hand man Stephen Sparrow to the first team position until a new manager has been found for the squad.

The two sides were separated by 20 points in the table before the match-up at the Waterwells sports-centre.

75 minutes into the game Quedgeley were four goals to two with Jack Plant, Oliver Curtis and a Sean Lawson on the score sheet and that is where things began to go downhill.

Gala Wilton scored three goals in quick succession as the league leaders regained the lead late at the Waterwells sports centre.

Quedgeley currently sit bottom of the Gloucestershire County league table with five points. The reds are looking to turn their second half of the season around and climb up the table.
