“We firmly believe we are going to pick up points soon” Slimbridge AFC manager Tom Speers positive following narrow defeat

Slimbridge AFC manager Tom Speers hailed the performance from his side despite defeat at top of the league Sholing on Saturday afternoon.

The home side, who now sit 10 points ahead of second place AFC Totton in the Southern League Division One South table, made the perfect start as top scorer Dan Mason headed home just two minutes into the game.

Slimbridge came close to equalising on the 19th minute as Levi Francis looped a ball over the Sholing defence, finding Ben Prictor who’s shot edged just wide.

The best Slimbridge chance of the first half fell to Rudi McKinnon who, after a defensive mistake, found himself one-on-one with Ryan Gosney in the Sholing net. The keeper did extremely well to save McKinnon’s first shot and with the rebound shot spraying wide, the forward was left with his head in his hands.

The second half brought much of the same with Will Hawes going close just minutes after the restart, nodding the ball into the arms of Gosney.

A curling Francis effort, heading straight into the top corner, was tipped over the Sholing bar and just minutes later McKinnon saw his shot stopped on the line with plenty of shouts for handball following.

But the Sholing defence stood firm and the league leaders were able to record their sixth win in a row and fifth consecutive clean sheet.

Despite leaving the Imperial Homes Stadium with no points, manager Speers lauded his sides performance.

The Slimbridge boss also highlighted how important it is for his side to carry this performance into their next game against Larkhall Athletic.

“We’ve got to be consistent. I’d say the last three games we’ve been very good. That’s the frustration that comes in, obviously with not picking up any points in those games. But Frome, Westbury and today, for large periods, we’ve been very good.

“We’ve got to take that into Larkhall. Of course. And it’s important that we go and take points against them because they’re in and around us now.”

Saturday’s defeat was their fourth consecutive loss, meaning they remain bottom of the table, but Speers has encouraged his side to ‘keep going’.

“I think it’ll click I really do because we’ve got an idea of how we want to play. We just stick to what we do well, we keep going.

“The boys are annoyed we lost but they are not down hearted. We firmly believe that we’re going to pick up a load of points soon.” Speers said.

Up next for the Swans is a trip to Larkhall Athletic this Saturday, a side that boast just four points more than Slimbridge.
