Wade Elliott reacts to Cheltenham Town’s first Papa John’s Trophy semi-final

Cheltenham Town beat Salford City 3-1 in the Papa John’s Trophy to reach their first semi-final in the competition.

Wade Elliott suggested his side was deserving of their win by saying “Quarter final of a cup you want to get through by hook or crook but I felt we were good value for it”.

Elliott felt Salford are a higher level than their division suggests by saying “They’re not a League Two team, everyone knows about Salford, they’ve got some really good players and caused us some problems in the first half”.

“We were able to correct half time and even in the first we created plenty of chances and we started to feel if it could be one of those days”.

New signing Will Goodwin made his debut for Cheltenham against Salford, Wade expressed what drew Cheltenham to the striker saying: “He’s a slightly different profile to what we’ve got and what we had, he’s got good physicality and he’s mobile”.

“I don’t want to heap too much to much pressure on his shoulders, he can help us right here and now but he can also develop into a good player”.

Cheltenham will be joined by Accrington Stanley, Bolton Wanderers and Plymouth Argyle in the semi-final with the draw taking place on Sky Sports this Saturday, directly after the Rotherham United vs Blackburn game.

Commenting on if Cheltenham have a preference Wade said “No, we are a game away from Wembley we will attack it and go from there”.

Wade on the controversial Luke Southwood challenge said “Luke’s fouled him outside the box but there’s two other players covering.

“I understand why they want to make a thing out of it but it looks a straight forward yellow to me and I would have been really surprised if he sent him off there”.

Most managers would understandably be excited ahead of a semi final, Wade commented on if he had the “buzz”: “I’d be lying to you if I said I wasn’t naïve if my players weren’t”.

Cheltenham Town will now be looking ahead to their EFL League One tie against Derby.
