Swindon Town Under-18s midfielder Owen Foye has stated that stepping up as a mentor for younger players has helped his own development as a leader.
Foye has enjoyed a breakthrough season including first-team involvement. He made his League Two debut in a 1-1 draw with Gillingham Town, and he has since reflected on the importance of guiding the new intake of younger players in the under-18 side.
“I’ve got a good understanding of how to play as a captain as well, how to be developed as a player,” he said.
“It will help me and others in the first years now, but next year when we become second years, it’ll help the younger ones when they come up.”

Foye believed the early exposure for some of the club’s under-15s and under-16 players has laid strong foundations for next season when Town looks to have yet another positive campaign.
“The Under-15s and even 16s have come up as the first-year squad and now have loads of experience as 18s. So, it will be good. Hopefully, we can do a lot better next year,” said Foye.
Having already made strides in his own game, Foye was quick to thank those around him for their support this year.
“It’s been a positive season. A lot of my teammates and coaches have really helped me develop as a player, so I’ve just got to thank everyone.”

Looking ahead, the focus for the midfielder is around coming back even stronger for pre-season to further his development and ultimately secure a professional contract, following in the footsteps of teammates Botan Ameen and Anthony McCormick.
“I will have a little bit of rest in the off-season and then just do my individual fitness work, really, so I can come back next year even better.”
