Kayleigh Jones, who is a sports therapist, is supporting the BBC Gloucestershire radio station and the BBC Bristol radio station. The radio presenters are taking part in BBCs three-legged thousand mile challenge for children in need.
“So our local teams will be completing 25 miles each between Bristol and Gloucestershire from early Tuesday yesterday to the end of Wednesday today.
“Six miles, but when you’re tied to someone it’s quite tough work.”
The University of Gloucestershire have also teamed up with the BBC for this nationwide challenge which will see them provide with aid to the radio presenters.
“What the students will be doing in this event in particular will be managing fatigue, dealing with minor injuries, communicating effectively, under that real world pressure.
“Some parts will be for live radio content so having to be adaptable, professional and have that confidence to on radio potentially.”
When participating in walks of this distance, preparations are needed. Jones outlined how important they are.
“Yeah, well a lot of stuff actually comes pre-walk in terms of preparation. Not only are they required during the event in terms of making sure they’re safe, every mile a new team member is joined to the radio presenter, so every mile that radio presenter is having to adjust to someone new.
“What I saw watching some of the three-legged walk yesterday was that if you loose your rhythm there is a big opportunity to trip and fall over. It’s quite a high risk thing so our students are kind of on hand to deal with that if that were to arise.”
Children in need has been ongoing since 1980, it has raised at least £1 billion in the 45 years it has been running. Jones spoke on how important it is to her to be helping out the charity.
“Anyway that we can help and raise funds for young children is obviously ideal, its great for our students to be involved, but that’s the real reason behind all of this, to raise awareness.
“I’d like to think that we’ve done that through our socials and through posting and with that big partnership with the SST and the BBC. I think we’ve got the word out there a little but more and hopefully we’ve raised more funds.”
