Road Safety Week 14-20 November is on to help decrease accidents

Accidents on UK’s roads are still at worrying levels, and residents across several cities are calling for stricter rules to create safer journeys for everyone.

Road Safety Week 14-20 November is now being held across the UK. The campaign aims to raise awareness about road accidents and the safety measures that could be taken to decrease them.

Gloucestershire County Council has given an overview on their website about the number of accidents and its severity that has been recorded between 2014 and 2018.

Data collected by the Gloucestershire Constabulary has found that young people between the ages of 20 and 24 are most likely to be involved in road traffic accidents, with a peak of 624 casualties.

The total number accidents over the five-year period started by 1169 in 2014, decreasing to 972 in 2018, and the total number of accidents rising to 5565 cases.

Figures show 130 of them were classified as fatal, while 1224 were described as serious and 4211 were said to have been slight.

Gloucestershire Police says that the leading causes of serious injury and death on UK roads are speeding, driving under the influence, along with not wearing a seat belt and using a mobile phone while driving.

The penalty for causing death by dangerous driving is up to 14 years in prison, and a driving ban for a minimum of two years, whereas penalties for causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving are up to five years in prison, and a driving ban for a minimum of one year.
