Bright lights combined with the heavy vibrations of music blaring from the speakers across the vast restaurant certainly made for a lively scene. Tables had been crammed together so as create as much dining space as physically possibly. This is good for business, not so great for customers however. When shown to our seat, it felt very much as though they just wanted our money. Sat incredibly close to the bar and each time a waiter walked past, they had to almost squeeze past us to avoid knocking into us. It was a cramped and slightly uncomfortable seating arrangement that was clearly designed to just generate as much money as possible.
The vast number of dishes on the menu was nice to see, with a larger than average number of options for vegans and vegetarians. For meat eaters as well, the range of options were good, with a number of more unusual burger toppings which makes Hubbox stand out as a burger joint because they aren’t serving the same, boring dishes that burger restaurants always serve.
I ordered the Betsy burger, which was a falafel patty with guacamole. It was really tasty and made a nice change from the traditional bean burgers that you would find as a vegetarian option. The person I went to Hubbox with ordered the classic cheese burger and said that it was average. There was nothing wrong with it, but it didn’t blow them away either. We ordered two sides to share, the cheesy chips were nice, but not anything special. The vegan nachos were a pleasant surprise, the cheese didn’t have the strange aftertaste that many vegan cheeses do, and I genuinely couldn’t tell the difference between them and regular nachos. They weren’t stingy with the nacho toppings either, there was a good amount of guacamole and salsa making them worth the money.

Ordering sides separate from mains obviously give the freedom to have the side you want, yet it also makes it more expensive. The burgers all range from £7-13 which ,when combined with the more expensive sides, can make for a pricier meal. The sides range from £3.50 – 9. Drinks were also quite expensive, although there was a 2 for 1 deal on the cocktails which is always a nice thing when you enjoy a cocktail or two.
Personally, although the range of food options was good and there were a good variety of dishes that wouldn’t often be found in burger restaurants, the layout of the restaurant was uncomfortable and the overall quality of the food wasn’t equal to the amount you had to pay. I thought Hubbox was overpriced for average food and in the future I will explore other restaurants before visiting Hubbox again. I feel that I would be able to find food that I enjoy more for a more reasonable price somewhere else.
