PREVIEW: Severn Stars look to close the gap to top half of table

Last week saw Severn Stars get their second win of the season when they travelled up to play Team Northumbria. Despite the long break for the Commonwealth games, this meant two wins on the bounce for the Stars in the league but it will be a tough task to get three.

They take on Loughborough Lightning on Saturday who not only sit two places above the Stars in the table but also come into the game off the back of a strong performance against benecosMavericks. The teams are either side of mid-table as Stars are sixth while Lightning are fourth.

Key Stats

  • Peace Proscovia second top scorer in league with 337. She has the highest conversion rate in the top ten scorers with 91%. Eleanor Cardwell, who is Stars’ top scorer and fourth in the league only has an 84% conversion rate so far this year.
  • Proscovia has 21 offensive rebounds which tops the league list. This is nine more than Cardwell for Stars.
  • Lightning player Shamera Sterling is leading the way in interceptions by quite a margin with 46 in only seven games. She is one of two players in the league above Stars’ Samantha Cook who has 31.
  • Stars overcome Loughborough in one area. Phumza Maweni leads the way in defensive rebounds with 26 and Sterling is second with 14. Sam Cook for the Stars is also third in the league with 13.

We should be in for a very competitive game with some exciting match-ups. Even though neither team are near the top of the league, both have individual players that are very influential. These players lead individual statistics for their positions and therefore have been proving their importance in their respective sides.

Beth Cobden will be important for the away team if they want to win. She will be one of two players on the court on Saturday who have won a Gold Medal.

Stars will hope Jodie Gibson’s first home fixture since returning from the Commonwealth Games with a gold medal will inspire her team to victory and close the gap on their opponents.
