MADRID OPEN: Kyle Edmund to face Denis Shapovalov in the quarter-finals

Britain’s Kyle Edmund is to face Denis Shapovalov in the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open after beating David Goffin in straight sets.

This is the first time that Edmund has made it to a quarter final of a Masters event.

He has impressed throughout the tournament so far with victories over Russia’s Daniil Medvedev and a first ever win against Serbian Novak Djokovic.

His victory against world number 10, Goffin, however was probably his best of the tournament so far, beating him in just over an hour.

He has really stepped up after Andy Murray suffered his hip injury and has since taken the mantle of British number one.

His next opponent is Canadian teenager Denis Shapovalov.

Shapovalov made the quarter final by beating his fellow countryman Milos Raonic.

You could say that his run to the quarter final has been significantly easier to that of Edmund, as he’s faced two players who are below him in the world rankings.

However, his third round performance against Raonic was as impressive as Edmund’s against Goffin.

Both of these young players will be hoping to recreate their current performances to set up a semi-final meeting with either USA’s John Isner or Germany’s Alexander Zverev.

The match starts at approximately around 6:00pm BST.
