Luke Littler impressed with an excellent bounce back from 5-0 down stunning Gerwyn Price to crown himself the nightly winner in the Dublin edition of Premier League darts.
Dublin saw Price take the trophy last year, although despite taking the first five legs in his final versus the 19-year-old, Littler won six on the bounce to take the night.
“I had no idea how I’ve done that, it was a very strange match. I was gone!” exclaimed Littler.
Fellow Welshman Jonny Clayton still leads the league despite an early exit at the expensive of last year’s champion Luke Humphries taking the 6-3 win. For the first time in the year Clayton had been sent home in the quarter-finals.
The other quarter-final results saw champion Littler take down crowd pleaser Stephen Bunting 6-3 who has failed to get past the semi-finals since his nightly win in night four.
Price whitewashed Josh Rock, who was paraded by boos every time he stepped up to the oche. Rock is the only man to not win a game in this year’s tournament, despite throwing a 9-dart-finish in Belfast.
Gian Van Veen pulled out of the tournament on Wednesday due to kidney stones, giving fellow dutchman Michael Van Gerwen a bye into the semi-finals.
A classic game was set between Van Gerwen and Littler; Van Gerwen took his extra practice time to put himself up 4-3 up in 12 and 11 dart legs. Both players then hit 170 checkouts to send the game into a 5-5 shootout. The English teenager held his nerve after Van Gerwen missed two match darts to take himself into the final.
The opposite side of the draw saw another Price dominance as he avenged his fellow Welshman beating Humphries 6-1, only dropping a singular leg throughout the night so far.
The final in the Irish capital was set to be a classic, but all odds turned against the tournament favourite as Price kept himself in great form taking himself just one double away from victory.
World number one Littler proved his worth though, capitalising on Price’s five missed opportunities at doubles to win six legs on the bounce and snatch the nightly trophy away from the Welshman.
