With Chris Dent now as captain, Gloucestershire will be hoping to improve on last season’s mid table affair, finishing 6th in last year’s County Championship.
Australian Daniel Worrall has been brought in as overseas player. Worrall represents South Australia back in his birthplace and has taken 130 first-class wickets at an average of 30 – so far in his career. However, it was the batting that let down the county last season – they will be hoping new signing Ryan Higgins can prove his worth as he makes the switch from Middlesex. Higgins has made the move from the first division to second in the hope of more four-day cricketing opportunities, something Gloucestershire will surely be able to provide for him. He joins the county having only featured in five county championship matches so far in his career, therefore his batting average of 25 will be likely to alter – hopefully upwards for Gloucester’s sake in the coming season. With now vice-captain Jack Taylor unable to bowl this season – 23-year-old Higgins maybe called upon to regularly tie down an end.
A big loss for Gloucestershire will be Phil Mustard who has left the club by mutual consent. The 35-year-old was one of the more experienced members of Gloucestershire’s squad and his presence at the crease will be sorely missed. The signing of Chris Rodgers as batting coach for the first two months of the season is a solid addition, having scored 25,470 first-class runs Rodgers has plenty of batting knowhow to pass on.
