Head Coach Wade Elliott is currently in charge at The Completely Suzuki Stadium after taking the job at Cheltenham in June 2022, but does he have a record to be proud off at the club or are his days numbered?
The Robins are currently sitting 18th in their league with eight wins, four draws and twelve losses, accumulating 28 points from 23 games.
This season Cheltenham Town have won 33% of matches. Cheltenham’s home form is just average with 5 wins, 1 draw and 5 losses and their away form is poor with 3 wins, 3 draws, and 7 losses. The Robins have also scored only 19 goals this season.
Forward Alfie May has been the Robins top goal scorer this season with seven goals and two assists. Daniel N’Lundulu had four goals under his belt and two assists and as such Cheltenham’s second top scorer but has now been loaned out to Bolton after being returned to Southampton after his loan spell with the Robins.
He (N’lundulu) was a somewhat divisive player with fans and his departure sparked this comment on social media: ‘Dan showed what he is or can be capable of at times but was `dead wood` for me most of the time’, ‘he usually went missing during many second halves’, ‘sulked a lot and has a problem with his temperament.’
Ryan Broom is the Robins third top goal scorer with two goals this season so far. The 26-year-old Welshman spent last season on loan at Plymouth but signed a one-year deal to bring him back to Cheltenham last September. James Olayinka at just 22 years old is raring to make an impression at Cheltenham and has looked dangerous as an attacking midfielder.
Caleb Taylor is 21 years old in just 2 days’ time and has made quite an impression on Robins fans with comments like this on Facebook ‘Class act mature beyond his young years this lad will go all the way with his gift and attitude.’
He is yet to score but in a post Morecambe match interview acknowledged “I need to be moving people out of the way and being really aggressive”. When asked about Cheltenham’s performance this season, he remarked “I am very confident of the squad…but we just take it a game at a time”.
Wade Elliott came in for much criticism after the Morecambe match with fans taking to social media to air their grievances including this from Chris Freeman – ‘Not going to get any better with him in charge! No threat in front of goal yet again. Lowest scorers in the league by a mile. There needs to be a change soon, because we’ll be in big trouble otherwise!’
There is also this disparaging thought from Mark Thorndale, ‘It would be amazing to see how much brilliant talent the manager is going to bring in lol, all teams are getting new players think he is waiting for any leftovers who cannot find a club”.
Whereas Steve Rolfe is far more direct, “I still cannot understand how Elliott is still in charge! He has no plan, no passion and no fight. To be honest, should never have been given the job in the 1st place. Get shot now before it’s too late and we end up back in league 2”.
Elliott seems oblivious to the fan’s comments about his leadership though and after the Salford City match said “Every fan wants to see their team working hard for the shirt. What I think everyone realises here is we are fighting the odds and punching above our weight massively. The next two home games will be two massive clubs coming here. What they recognise is that if you are going to upset the odds you must have a group that’s fully committed, working hard and everyone pulling together.”
