Gloucester Rugby’s Time for a Strategic Overhaul: Ranking departures

With the release of 19 players following the conclusion of the 2024/25 season, Gloucester Rugby are electing for a massive rebuild, uncommon in the sport of rugby. The Gloucestershire side faces a significant transition Park Life Sport will rank Gloucester’s decision to release numerous senior players.

Chris Harris- S

Losing Harris is a huge loss for the Gloucester administration. With 40 caps for Scotland and a century of games for the Cherry and Whites, the foundational side for Gloucester now will have a gaping hole to fill. With the defensive side of his game being the most valuable, it could be really challenging to replace the intelligence of the centre.

Ruan Ackermann – A

Ackermann has been brilliant for Gloucester Rugby this season. A colossus ball carrying ability and strong tackling are just a handful of strengths to his game. The back row star surpassed 150 appearances for the Cherry and Whites and will be a big miss.

Christian Wade – B

The former NFL star has had a brief but impactful spell, as the prolific try scorer has quality try scoring abilities and has scored eight this season. His in-game IQ and attacking prowess will leave a gap as he looks almost certain to make the switch to Rugby league with Wigan Warriors.

Freddie Clarke – B

The number eight leadership qualities echo volumes serving as the club’s player representative beyond the pitch. He is a player that will be hard to replace. Finding a player who can match Clarke’s adaptability, experience and consistency will be a problem for the Cherry Whites.

Santiago Carreras – A

With 53 appearances for Argentina and over 75 for Gloucester, and a move to Bath for the 2025-26 season already lined up, Carreras creation for scoring opportunities is a big part of his game and could prove to be a big loss for Gloucester.

Gareth Anscombe – C

Anscombe’s experience shows for wherever the Welsh man finds himself. Aged 33 and 39 international caps for Wales. His injury record has made his availability limited for Gloucester this season and has already been replaced, meaning he won’t be a massive loss.

Zach Mercer – B

Mercer’s dynamic playing style and leadership qualities have been excellent for the Gloucestershire side this season, especially with his commitment to the club despite external interest from France. A difficult player to replace but a challenge Gloucester will take on.

Albert Tuisue – C

Tuisue’s physical presence and versatility were key parts in his game alongside his ability to break defensive lines was superb, however injuries have impacted him and the Fijian international will seek opportunities elsewhere.
