Reports from Gloucestershire Live have revealed that chairman Paul Baker has claimed Cheltenham Town are in “a healthy financial position to strengthen the playing squad this month”. The question is where will Gary Johnson use this money.
It has to be said that Cheltenham Town’s main problem this season has been their inconsistency. This was highlighted most recently after they won 4-1 with a fantastic performance away to Colchester United, and then followed it up with a 2-0 home defeat to Accrington Stanley on Saturday.
In truth, Cheltenham need to bring in multiple players in multiple positions, but their key problem is in defence. They have been very poor defensively this season, and boast the third worst defensive record in the league. Although they have looked to bolster their defensive options by bringing in Manny Onariase on loan from Rotherham United, the young centre back’s inexperience could cost them, as it was his mistake that led to the second goal on Saturday.
For Cheltenham, they need to look at bringing in experience instead of loaning in so many youngsters. The constant mistakes and inconsistency in their performances can be put down to such a youthful team, and out of their starting 11 against Accrington, 6 of them were aged 24 and under.

So, unsurprisingly the area where fans what improvements is their defence. What Cheltenham should be targeting immediately is a left back, as they haven’t had one all season, and have frequently had to use players out of position. But more importantly, they must target experienced players who can give this side stability, and more than just one.
