A417 Reopened After Fatal Crash

By Jemima Wittich

After being closed 13-hours, the A417 was finally reopened at 5:30 this morning.

The crash took place yesterday at 16:38 between the A436 Air Balloon Roundabout and a junction at the Cowley Roundabout. The crash involved 3 cars, a red SEAT, a black BMW and a VW Transporter.

The driver of the red SEAT, a man in his 40s, was killed in the crash, and declared dead at the scene. The passengers in the Black BMW, a man and woman in their 60s, were left seriously injured and taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. The passengers in the VW Transporter were left unharmed.

The road was closed was 13-hours to allow the emergency services to work on the scene. The National Highways tweeted: ‘Recovery and clear-up work are now complete and the road is fully reopened.’

To improve the safety of the roads in the area, the Transport Minister Huw Merriman MP recently approved a landscape-led highways scheme that will create a safe, free-flowing road, whilst still conserving the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Though this was a long awaited decision, it has left us hopeful that the area will become a safer place for all those on the road.
