“I’m always ready” – Local boxer, Denham Jobling Jr discusses recent winnings and what he’s looking forward to in the future

“At the moment now, just looking to stay on top of training and my coaches are looking for opponents for me to fight,” says Gloucestershire amateur boxer Denham Jobling Jr following recent win.

Surely the best pound for pound amateur boxer in Gloucestershire.

“I have just won the Southwest Golden Glove tournament; it was two days and two fights. Won them both job done.

“It was a medal I won, definitely my favourite accolade appearance wise.”

Jobling, from Cirencester, now has a record of 28-1 following these wins and an impressive trophy to show for it.

“I don’t have much planned as such, just staying on top of training and keeping myself fit and healthy because I never know when I’ll get called up to box.

“My club has a home show coming up around November time but still struggling to find a match up for me.

“More excitingly though, I will potentially have a trip to Morocco in January which I’m really looking forward as I’ve never fought there before.”

Throughout his illustrious amateur career starting from when he was 14, Junior has fought in Gibraltar, Scotland and all across the Uk including Bristol and London.

The 20-year-old seems to be very disciplined in terms of training with the lingering possibility of a call up.

“I stay ready all the time, 24/7. I have this saying that I follow religiously, stay ready to avoid getting yourself ready.

“When preparing for a fight, any fight not just a final, my amateur experience helps massively. Knowing what to expect and keeping myself composed is a huge help if I ever feel nervous for fights.”

“Go hard in the gym and stay on top of schedule. For me that’s five days a week and staying consistent with my diet. These are the most important concepts of my life when it comes to boxing preparation.”

Despite not being a professional yet, Denham uses professional standard techniques to prepare himself for fights as well as adhere to a strict diet.

“It’s a high protein and high carb diet until comes to 10 days before the fight where I need to drop weight and when I drop the carb intake.”

Following the Connor McGregor documentary on Netflix where he is filmed trying to lose weight drastically in preparation for the Dustin Poirier fight in 2021, there were obvious comparisons with Jobling’s chosen method.

“I do something similar 3 days before the fight where I only eat one meal a day and water load. Then sauna the water weight out by sweat and just keep doing that to keep under 75 kg.

“Then 12 hours before weigh-in, I’ll drink three litres of water which pushes the rest of the water out my body and then don’t touch any food or drink until after the fight.”

Being a young man, it is incredibly important for him to have the support around him

“I’m very grateful I’ve got the support I have. My coaches are great and very motivating to have in my corner as well as my other boxers at the club.

“Of course, always a pleasure fighting in front of my parents, makes me proud that I’m doing them proud.”
