Residents have spoken out about the potholes on their roads as a list of 55 roads around the county to be resurfaced during the 2026/27 year has been released.
Gloucestershire County Council released a list on the 25th March 2026 as a part of their “major programme to improve road quality and deliver long lasting repairs”, which includes 10 roads in Cheltenham, five in Gloucester, 21 in Tewksbury, eight in Forest of Dean, eight in the Cotswolds and two in Stroud.
With a growing number of potholes reported in the county, and more developing with the bad weather, many residents around the county have expressed their frustration at the state of the roads.

Granley Road, one of the roads off the A40 in Cheltenham that is on the list of roads to be resurfaced, is used as a shortcut by commuters and the residents are speaking up.
With cars parked along one side of its road, Granley Road has 15 different potholes scattered along the middle where cars pass daily.
Doris Mayweather, an resident along the road spoke about the number of “near-misses” that she has experienced right on her doorstep.
She said that “when people drive through here, they don’t know how to go around them safely”.

The residential area is a quieter route that many drivers take to avoid one of the major roundabouts on the A40, Gloucester Road but because of the narrow road and tight turns, the potholes become unavoidable in some areas.
Doris has “high hopes” that the council will do a good job and make the road but that not the case for all its residents.
David Cosby, another resident along Granley Road has said that he’s not “entirely confident” that the council will do a sufficient job in restoring the road and that “the road has slowly been getting better but it’s still not as good as some of the others nearby.”.
David, who commutes daily to and from work, also said that “it does make [him] nervous to drive through them when there isn’t another option.”.
But not all roads that are in desperate need for resurfacing in the county have been added to the list.
Church Road, a lane that connects Leckhampton and Shurdington in Cheltenham, is notorious for its pothole riddled roads.
Nigel Farmead, a resident along this road said how “disappointed” he is that Church Road hasn’t been added to the list.
He also spoke about how it’s a “growing danger” as many of the potholes are located near turns in the road where “you can’t see what’s coming”.

Cllr Joe Harris, Cabinet Member for the Highways, said: “I know many of these roads cannot be fixed soon enough, which is why it’s great to see 55 resurfacing schemes getting underway this spring.”
Harris has also recognised that “many of our roads are in a poor state after a very wet winter and we’re committed to fixing our roads.”
Drivers whose cars have been damaged by potholes on the roads can file a claim with Gloucestershire County Council, but the waiting time can be up to 3 months for an acceptance or denial. The Gloucestershire Highways website provides an in-depth step by step explanation on how to successfully file a claim.
