Cheltenham-based driver Zak O’Sullivan given lifeline to return to racing after Formula 2 axe

Former Formula 2 driver Zak O’Sullivan has finally returned to racing after his axe from F2 earlier this season due to a lack of funding.

The Williams Driver Academy star drove for ART Grand Prix but was replaced by fellow Williams junior Luke Browning before the Monza round. He posted on his social media platforms after the switch, hinting at a lack of funding to complete the season.

In 2024 O’Sullivan won F2’s illustrious Monaco feature race in dramatic fashion. The Gloucestershire driver started from 15th on the grid, taking advantage of a late virtual safety car to pip race leader Isack Hadjar. He picked up a second race win at a shortened sprint at Spa-Francorchamps.

Now, the 19-year-old has been provided an opportunity back in a single-seater racing car after it was announced that he would drive a Japanese Super Formula car at Suzuka.

The Williams Formula 1 junior will drive for Kondo Racing on Day three of the test. The series confirmed his participation just prior to the start of Wednesday’s morning session.

Super Formula is widely regarded as one of the best open-wheel series globally. Notably, VCARB Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson participated in Super Formula in 2023, finishing runner-up to current F2 driver Ritomo Miyata. Alpine’s Pierre Gasly, as well as IndyCar champion Alex Palou, are just a few of the respected names to have participated in the one-make series.

2025 Formula 1 driver Oliver Bearman will also be taking part in the session in order to learn Suzuka before his maiden race at the iconic Japanese track. Mercedes Rookie Kimi Antonelli was also due to be taking part but has missed out due to sickness.
