It’s fair to say Newport County fans are delighted with how the club has been handled so far this season, coming away with another three points in this afternoons EFL League Two fixture against promotion rivals Gillingham.
The Exiles have picked up 15 points out of a possible 18 with their one defeat coming against a strong Notts County side earlier in the week.
Season ticket holder, Andrew Perry shared his thoughts on the clubs recent run of form: “Phenomenal, we went from a summer of discontent to really turning it round and with current form we’re on top of the current form table, even though we’ve just lost on Tuesday it’s the first defeat in seven.”
After today’s 1-0 victory over Gillingham, County stay in 14th position and only two points off the play-offs. The likes of Notts County, AFC Wimbledon, Harrogate Town and more are also fighting for their chance to rise up to League One
Lifelong fan, Neil Siggins gives his predictions on where the club will finish the 2023/24 season: “Mid table, I’d say about 14th, I can’t see us getting into the play-offs there’s just too many sides with better budgets and better players, I just can’t see it happening this season.”
Once again, striker Will Evans marked his name on the scoresheet with the winning goal in the 61st minute. The Welshman is now on 19 goals in League Two and will be desperate for the golden boot trophy. At the moment, there’s only two strikers standing in his way, Notts County’s Macauley Langstaff, who picked up a brace on Tuesday night at Rodney Parade and Salford City’s Matt Smith who also scored a brace in their 5-3 win against Barrow.
With Evans performing the way he has been this season, it’s bound to be a struggle to keep the star man this summer with multiple clubs already pushing for his signature.
Dave Cook shared his opinion on the future of County’s main man: “I think he’s come on loads this year as a striker, 20 odd goals this season, we’d give our right arm for a striker like that but I read somewhere else that he’s in contract talks with the County so hopefully they can agree a new deal, better money and yeah hopefully he’ll stay for another year.”
Newport fans were delighted to hear the news of Huw Jenkins taking over the majority of the club as the business man purchased 52% of the club last month. The former Swansea City chairman did a fantastic job at the Swansea.com Stadium for the period of time he was there, helping the club rise up the ranks.
“Hopefully we’ll get a bit more stability, sign a new contract with The Dragons and stay at Rodney Parade, get the training ground sorted and I think he can take us onwards and upwards, the club as a whole, everyone in the club has done well in the last couple of years, we’ve got to two play-off finals on a limited budget so we just need Huw now to get us that extra bit of stability for a shot to get into League One,” said Dave.
Who has been the best player this season? Everyone knows the obvious answer, Will Evans, but apart from the striker, who do the Newport fans think has been the standout player so far in this campaign?
“I like the centre half (Ryan) Delaney, I think he’s had an excellent season, he was a bit off the pace Tuesday I thought but then I’ve just been told he picked up an injury early in the game and should’ve gone off earlier and then he was subbed and not playing today of course but yeah I’d say he’s been my player of the season,” stated Neil.
A massive blow in County’s play-off push was announced in Graham Coughlan’s post-match interview as he explained Ryan Delaney was going to miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury.
