Lionesses star Fran Kirby has been ruled out of their fixture against Italy tomorrow evening after suffering from a minor knee injury.
England’s manager Sandra Wiegman had this to say about the 30 year old’s absence
‘She’s well but she went home, went back to Chelsea.
She has some irritation on her knee.
It’s a minor injury but we didn’t want to take any risks so she’s being assessed at club and we don’t expect it to be a bad injury.”
Kirby suffered a setback after she suffered an injury in the warm up against Austria which resulted in her being replaced by Ella Toone.
The former Reading attacking midfielder has suffered a nasty spate of injuries throughout her career which resulted in her missing the Women’s World Cup last summer, as well as suffering from pericarditis in 2019 and a fatigue illness that disrupted her 2022.
These persistent injuries have meant that Kirby’s fitness is being carefully monitored, which was proven when she was taken off in their 7-2 humbling against Austria on Friday night.
Dutchman, Wiegman was not concerned about her injuries and hopes that they will have a boost for her fitness in the coming days,
“I don’t think at Chelsea it’s always been the reason she’s been injured or not available that she didn’t start,
“She was available for us and would start and she wasn’t able to which is a disappointment.
Moving forward I hope she will be on the pitch quick and I’m positive about that.”
