Gloucestershire Football Roundup: Weekend Of 24/25 February

Like usual, it has been a busy week of football across Gloucestershire as eight teams are being reviewed for their performance and result last weekend.

There will also be a look into the upcoming events for the teams and state of play as plenty of outfits look to survive relegation this season.

Cheltenham Town

Starting off with Cheltenham Town as they were held by Wigan at the DW Stadium keeping the Robins in the relegation zone for another week at least.

Cheltenham took the lead after just nine minutes thanks to Matty Taylor’s scrappy goal, although that was cancelled out just seven minutes into the second-half.

Robins boss, Darrell Clarke will see the result positively as Cheltenham are now only one point away from safety as they go on the search for survival.

Clarke told the press: “I’m delighted with the point because if you can’t perform as well as you can, don’t lose the game and we did that.”

Forest Green Rovers

As for fellow Gloucestershire football league side, Forest Green, they won their second game in three games as they begin to march towards a potential great escape.

A Charlie McCann beauty sealed the three points against a tough Tranmere Rovers side at the New Lawn to move Forest Green to just four points from safety with Grimsby the side in clear sight.

There could be a real possibility that both Cheltenham and Forest Green could avoid relegation this season.

Cirencester Town

On to Non-League, Cirencester Town could be in contention to promotion as they drew 1-1 with Bedford Town on Saturday February 24.

They currently sit fifth in the table by goal-difference in the play-offs of Tier seven and will be looking for a route to promotion.

Gloucester City

On to National League North side Gloucester City who won their first home game of 2024 after a 1-0 win over FA Cup specialists, Scarborough Athletic.

Theo Robinson’s 7th minute goal was enough to secure all three points as Mike Cook looks to re-invigorate his side this season.

Unfortunately for Gloucester, they are also in a relegation battle as they sit 22nd in the league.

Bishops Cleeve

Now for more positive news as Bishops Cleeve smashed Paulton Rovers 6-2 at Kayte Lane as the Mitres look to move forward in the league.

Paulton are down in the dumps as they remain second from bottom in 19th, whereas Bishops Cleeve are becoming a solid midfield outfit and are currently 13th.

The Mitres went on a run of four league games without victory including three defeats in that time, but a thumping win at home means they are back on track in the league battle.

So that will conclude the round-up from the weekend as three of the sides continue to fight relegation as it looks a little better for Cirencester who are fighting for promotion.
