“At the minute the squad is way too big, we can’t carry that many players in our squad we have to trim that which means one or two players futures lie elsewhere” was Darrell Clarke’s brutal assessment of the Cheltenham Town squad ahead of the Wigan Athletic fixture on Saturday.
The manager of the League One side pulled no punches as he assessed his first five weeks at the Gloucestershire based club.
“I have been in the building five weeks now and the squad is too big. From what I have seen the squad is full of quantity, it is lacking in quality we have plenty of quantity not quality.” Clarke summarised.
The Mansfield born ex player knew when taking on the Robins job that work was needed. “I said when I took the job on there is no short-term fix at this football club we have tried to fix things short term but is going to be a couple of windows before I have the squad, I want in the building that can produce a team that we can all be proud of”
“I can’t lie there are too many players to work with tough decisions are always made over your career as a manager and sometimes it is more suitable for player to find a future elsewhere so that we can build and keep building” was Clarke response to the tough job that lies ahead.

Changes are imminent and players need to step up if their future is to be at Cheltenham Town under the guidance of Clarke. It is a project and a long term one at that.
