WSL Preview: Chelsea battle Arsenal at the top, while Birmingham City scramble for survival

The women’s Super League is back for another weekend of fixtures and the race for the title is closer than ever.

League leaders Chelsea managed to capitalise on their games in hand over Arsenal and leapfrogged the Gunners with their resounding 9-0 win against Leicester City.

The Blues play Reading on Sunday, in a game where they will need to win to ensure they maintain their one point lead over the Gunners, who face Leicester at the weekend.

Vivianne Miedema’s bid for the golden boot has taken a big knock as Chelsea’s Sam Kerr’s excellent form has sent her four goals clear onto 14 for the season.

Birmingham City’s hopes of survival are slipping away as they sit in last place, firmly cemented to the base of the league on four points. They host Everton on Friday, who are currently three places ahead in ninth.

Manchester City travel to face West Ham on Saturday, while their rivals Manchester United play Brighton. The Red Devils are just six points behind league leaders Chelsea, but have played one more game than the Blues.

Elsewhere in the league on Sunday, Tottenham host Aston Villa as their hopes of a top three finish are still alive. The Lilywhites are currently seven points behind third place Manchester United, but have two games in hand over the Red Devils.

If they manage to capitalise on their two games in hand, they will move within one point of Man United and just six points behind their bitter North London rivals Arsenal.
