Sub-zero temperatures a potential sporting chaos

The Met Office have issued a warning for snow as the whole of the UK is hit with what is being dubbed the ‘Siberian Freeze’.

With Forest Green Rovers, Cheltenham Town, Gloucester City and Gloucester Rugby all in action over the weekend freezing conditions will potentially have a big impact on whether games will go ahead or not.

People in Gloucestershire woke up today to temperatures of around -3ºc and weather forecasters are warning that it’s only going to get colder heading into March.

Gloucester Rugby are playing at home tomorrow against Wasps who currently sit one place above the Cherry & Whites in the Aviva Premiership table.

Gloucester media manager Duncan Wood said: “The pitch has been covered for the past 72 hours so we anticipate no issues with staging our game against Wasps tomorrow. The pitch itself has already been marked up, so the covers will remain in place until tomorrow morning”.

Looking ahead to their match next week against Newcastle Falcons, Wood said: “The weather conditions could play into their hands a little bit, because obviously with Newcastle being where it is, it’s very close to the Scottish border they are actually used to playing in conditions that are considerably colder. We are hoping that it warms up a bit.”

Gloucester City play away to Whitehawk down in Brighton and so far there are no reports of the weather affecting the game.

Cheltenham Town, who also play away from home to Luton Town tomorrow, have released a statement saying: “There are currently no concerns about adverse weather conditions or the
match going ahead tomorrow and therefore we look forward to making the trip to Kenilworth Road to face Luton Town.

Luton however, have said: “We can’t be 100% sure, but our pitch has the protective covers over it so we aren’t anticipating any problems.”

Gloucester Rugby’s game with Wasps kicks off at 2.30pm at the Kingsholm Stadium. Forest Green Rovers play Crawley Town at home, that kicks off at 3pm, with Cheltenham and Gloucester City kicking off at the same time.
