UOG Tennis captain Tristan Scurr is confident ahead of their Varsity fixture against Worcester.
“They’re not here to win this year, we’re here to win this year and it will happen,” announced Scurr, who featured in last year’s narrow defeat to Worcester.
With Varsity a month away, the club captain continued on the mood around the team. “I think everyone’s excited after last year. We’re all very excited to get on the court and show Worcester that last year them winning was a fluke.”
“Our women’s team obviously were amazing last year, and we’re very much hoping that they’ll continue this year too, you know, keep the streak going. Everyone’s excited, everyone loves varsity, it’s a great event, so I think we’re all ready to go and we’re almost waiting on it now, we’d like it to start,” shared Scurr, showing the group’s togetherness and motivation to get the all important result.
The Gloucestershire side sit in fourth place in the Men’s Western Tier 3 (Fast 4) League with only Exeter remaining as their final fixture.
The 21-year old claimed: “We’re hoping we can go there, do some damage and show to Exeter that you don’t need 700 club members in order to actually have a team and play well.”
He continued, “It’ll be a challenge, you know, but I think the team is all very excited. We like a challenge, we don’t want the matches too easy.
“I think we’re hoping to put out quite a strong team, we’ve had a couple of availability issues in the last couple of matches. It won’t be our full-strength team, but it’ll be a good team.”

Scurr has captained his side to two wins, two draws and two defeats in the league this season, with the team growing in performances both individually and in pairs.
He is currently unbeaten in singles, despite recently coming out of recovery from a shoulder injury he battled with for the majority of last season.
The captain revealed, “Last year I was playing through the injury and it got to the point where it was unbearable to live with, so I thought I’d be a bit more sensible this season, but it’s been good, you know?
“The matches I’ve played, I’ve enjoyed and, you know, they’ve gone well. I don’t think I’ve lost a singles (game) yet this season out of the ones I’ve played, so, overall, it’s been good.”
It’s been Scurr’s first year as captain, which is a role that he has had to be patient for.
He commented on how he’s dealt with the responsibility: “It’s probably a good question to ask the team! I’d say I’m doing alright. You know, obviously big shoes to fill; Jacob Jones last year, he was obviously incredible and I VC’d him. There’s a lot of responsibilities, a lot of stuff to deal with, a lot of stuff to sort out, but I have a great team around me as well, my committee’s amazing.”
Come April 14th, when Varsity is scheduled, Scurr will be looking to turn a promising season for UOG Tennis into triumph when they face rivals Worcester.
