“We are close to an agreement on one or two players” – Cheltenham Town manager Michael Flynn on the January transfer window ahead of Morecambe clash

Cheltenham boss Micheal Flynn was asked about the upcoming January transfer window in his press conference Friday morning, giving fans an exciting Christmas present as he revealed the club are close to wrapping up some early transfer business.

“It’s already started, (preparations) began months ago,”

“We’re close on loans at the minute, there might be one or two that we’d look to bring in permanently but that would be further down the line.”

His side will be full of confidence after beating League 1 side Cambridge United 2-1 at home, in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday.

Flynn spoke of the impact the victory could have on their transfer budget, ahead of the winter window.

“I had to pick what I thought was the strongest side available on that night, because we need the funds, and I’m responsible to try and win us as much money as we can.

“We aren’t going to have bundles available to bring in who and how many we want,

“We’re going to work within the framework of the football club, and we’re gonna try and get the best players we can that will fit into the budget.”

The window will undoubtedly be a massive aid to the Robins following a congested Christmas period which sees them play six games in 21 days from Saturday.

Injuries have plagued Cheltenham significantly this campaign, with Harry Pell and Ryan Haynes ruled out for the foreseeable future, whilst Manni Norkett (on loan from Nottingham Forest) is unavailable until January, with his loan set to expire in the new year.

“We’ve just got to get on with it, it gives somebody else a chance whether that’s in the team or the squad, and they’ve got to take it with both hands.”

However, a small boost came in the form of West Ham loanee Levi Laing returning to action earlier this month following a seven week spell on the sidelines.

Meanwhile, captain Scot Bennett edges closer to a return after getting injured on his birthday during Cheltenham’s 2-0 loss away at Salford City in the FA Cup.

“Scot’s coming on well, he’ll possibly be available next week.”

Saturday’s opponent Morecambe currently sit 23rd in the table, however, they have a commendable record on the road, with Flynn highlighting the importance of treating it the same as any other game.

“They’re a very difficult team to play against, Derek (Adams) has just won manager of the month, they’re mixing it up, playing football, building from the back,

“When they came up they were very much low-block and hit you on the counter attack, now they have a very different team, and players that can hurt you,

“It’s going to be a really, really tough game, and if any of my players think differently, it’s going to be a long afternoon.”
